Hydroponics - Gardening Evolved

What is Hydroponics?

What do the United States, United Kingdom, Australia, India and Japan have in common? They are all countries turning to hydroponic methods of farming to produce big healthy greens as traditional methods of agriculture are becoming less sustainable! Traditional agriculture means growing fruits, veggies and spices out of the ground. For centuries this has been the primary means to grow produce, but now the land is becoming over worked, too much space is needed to keep up production with the demand of a growing population, and incredibly large amounts of water and resources are consumed through this old method of farming. This has led to a decrease in quality, flavor, and nutritional value of the fruits and vegetables that are sold in most grocery stores. Now, researchers and modernized farmers are developing and using hydroponics as a new method of growing bigger, tastier produce!

Hydroponics is a method of agriculture recorded to date back as far as the 1600’ However, it has not been an efficient means of production until recently. Hydroponics essentially means growing plants in a nutrient rich solution instead of soil. By growing in a nutrient  solution, plants are more easily able to get minerals and vitamins they need to grow. This results in quicker and healthier plant growth, and, because hydroponic gardens can be placed indoors (as long as they receive plenty of light) they can be pesticide free. Growing hydroponically can also reduce water waste by around 90%, helping to conserve water wherever this method of agriculture is being used!

Contrary to popular belief, growing plants hydroponically from home can be easier than using pots and soil. It's certainly is less messy - no soil spills and stains, and no watering necessary! Growing plants at home has also proven to have calming, therapeutic effects as you nurture your plants and watch them thrive and flourish.
